Washington to Hawaii freight has a head start most states never get: the ship loads inside the state. Your full container rides a truck to the Port of Tacoma, crosses the Pacific on a Matson vessel, then rides another truck to your island address.

Each of those handoffs needs a booking, a cleared driver and the right paperwork. A freight forwarder lines them up so they connect.

How Does Freight Forwarding from Washington to Hawaii Work?

A freight forwarder for Washington to Hawaii freight books your full container on a Matson sailing from Tacoma, then arranges the trucking and terminal access at both ends. A self-loaded container runs about $10,000 to $20,000. Expect 7 to 10 days port to port and 12 to 20 days door to door.

The Washington Inland Leg: Western Washington or Over the Cascades

Washington containers bound for Hawaii normally head to the Port of Tacoma. Matson’s Pacific Northwest service to Hawaii loads there, at a Northwest Seaport Alliance terminal. The inland leg in Washington is normally a truck run, not a rail move.

How long that truck run takes depends on which side of the mountains you live on.

Winter on Snoqualmie Pass

Snoqualmie Pass tops out at about 3,000 feet on I-90. From November 1 to April 1, the state requires heavy vehicles to carry chains between North Bend and Ellensburg. WSDOT also closes the pass for heavy snow and avalanche control several times most winters.

For eastern Washington freight, that means a winter pickup can lose a day waiting on the pass. Plan your loading date with some slack between December and March.

What We Coordinate for Washington Freight

No forwarder owns the vessel or every truck involved. The job is booking each piece and making the pieces meet. For a Washington origin, that covers five steps.

Every Washington booking is coordinated by Karen Danino, who owns Hawaiian Movers. We hold USDOT 4024631 and MC 1518931, plus SCAC code HWMI.

For the full scope of mainland service, see our main freight forwarder to Hawaii page. The pier side of this lane is covered in detail on our Tacoma freight forwarding page.

Full Containers Only, in Four Sizes

We ship exclusive-use full containers, door to door. Your goods never share a box with another shipper. You choose a 20ft, 40ft, 40ft high cube or 45ft container. Inside it can be household goods or business cargo, including equipment, store inventory and building materials leaving Washington.

You can load and unload it yourself, or ask us to book a crew. We also accept shipper-owned containers. Our container size guide compares the inside space of each one.

Placing a Container at a Washington Address

A chassis needs room to back in and set the box down. Firm, level ground helps, and so does a clear overhead path. Rain-soaked lawns in western Washington can be soft for much of the year, so a paved driveway or gravel pad is the safer spot. Check with your HOA or city before a container sits on a street or shared lane.

When a Full Container Is the Wrong Fit

Full containers only, which means no shared loads, pallet freight, parcels or air. A few boxes or a pallet or two belong with a consolidator or parcel service.

Vehicles stay out of household containers too. A car books on its own, and our guide to shipping a car to Hawaii explains that process. If you are moving your household, see our Washington to Hawaii container shipping page, which covers the move itself.

Cost and Timing from Washington

A full Washington-to-Hawaii container runs about $10,000 to $20,000.

Two things move your number most:

LegTypical time
Ocean crossing from TacomaAbout 6 days
Port to port, with terminal timeAbout 7 to 10 days
Door to door12 to 20 days, up to about 25 on longer routes

Tacoma has the longest ocean crossing of the three West Coast ports.

Freight for the Neighbor Islands

Honolulu Harbor is the hub for mainland cargo. Freight bound for Maui or Kauai transfers there to an inter-island vessel, which can add time. Since 2021, Matson has unloaded all Big Island cargo at Kawaihae on the west side of the island.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shipping a full container from Seattle to Hawaii costs about $10,000 to $20,000 when you load and unload it yourself. That range applies to any mainland origin, including western Washington. Container size and your exact pickup address move the number most. Small loads such as a few boxes or a single pallet are a better fit for parcel services or consolidators.

Several types of companies ship from Seattle to Hawaii, and the right one depends on your load. Ocean carriers run the vessels out of Tacoma. Full-container forwarders book the sailing plus the trucking at both ends, door to door. Consolidators combine smaller shipments into shared containers, and parcel services handle boxes. Before you book anyone, check the USDOT and MC numbers and ask for written transit times.

Yes, freight from Spokane can ship to Hawaii in a full container. The container trucks about 290 miles west on I-90, over Snoqualmie Pass, to the Port of Tacoma before it sails. In winter, chain rules and pass closures can hold a truck for a day, so leave slack in your schedule. Tell us your full address, and we will check the route and container size before you book.

Freight from Washington to Hawaii takes about 12 to 20 days door to door, and up to about 25 on longer routes. The ocean crossing from Tacoma alone is about 6 days. Pier to pier, including terminal time, plan on about 7 to 10 days. A Seattle-area pickup reaches the pier quickly, while a Spokane or Tri-Cities pickup adds several more hours of driving, and more in winter.
