How Container Shipping from Hawaii to San Diego Works
- An empty container is delivered to the approved Hawaii loading location.
- The customer loads and secures the household goods, or hires an independent professional mover to assist.
- The locked container is transported to the appropriate Hawaii terminal for its scheduled sailing.
- After the ocean portion, Hawaiian Movers coordinates the required inland rail or trucking movement toward San Diego.
- A qualified trucking partner completes delivery to the approved destination address.
The exact route is selected according to the Hawaii origin, San Diego destination, equipment availability and current carrier schedule. Each quote is prepared individually after the complete shipment information is reviewed.
San Diego County Destinations We Serve
Service is available to approved locations throughout San Diego County, including San Diego, Chula Vista, National City, La Mesa, El Cajon, Santee, Poway, Escondido, Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas and surrounding communities. Coastal, rural and restricted-access destinations require an address review before scheduling.
The final delivery arrangement depends on safe legal access for a tractor and container chassis. Narrow coastal or canyon roads, low tree branches, steep or winding approaches, gated communities, apartment and high-rise rules, military-base access and local parking restrictions must be identified before the shipment is booked.

Exclusive-Use Full-Container Service
Every container is reserved exclusively for one customer. Hawaiian Movers does not provide shared-container service, less-than-container-load shipping, individual box shipping, parcel service, air freight or standalone inter-island moving.
This service is designed for customers shipping enough household goods, personal belongings, business equipment or approved trade-show materials to require a full container.
Container Sizes Available
- 20-foot container
- 40-foot container
- 40-foot High-Cube container
- 45-foot container, subject to route and equipment availability
Customer-owned containers may also be accepted after the equipment and shipment details are reviewed. The appropriate container size depends on the volume of the shipment, the loading location, the destination access and equipment availability.
Door-to-Door Coordination
Hawaiian Movers coordinates the transportation stages from the Hawaii origin to the San Diego destination. This may include delivery of the empty container, pickup after loading, terminal transportation, ocean booking, inland rail when required and final trucking delivery.
Customers may load and unload their own container or hire independent professional movers. Hawaiian Movers coordinates transportation and can discuss the loading and delivery requirements before the reservation is completed.
Addresses elsewhere in the state are covered on the statewide California lane.
Transit Times
A Hawaii-to-San Diego move normally includes ocean transportation followed by the required Southern California delivery movement. The ocean leg runs 7 to 10 days port to port, and door to door is about 12 to 15 days. East County, mountain or rural destinations may require additional time. Neighbor-island origins, sailing schedules, weather, terminal congestion and final delivery appointments may also affect timing.
Transit times are estimates and are not guaranteed. The available sailing and expected transportation schedule will be reviewed when the shipment is booked.
Stage | Typical time |
Loading and the harbor cutoff in Hawaii | a few days before your sailing |
Ocean crossing to Long Beach | 7 to 10 days port to port |
Drayage south to your San Diego address | same day to two days |
Door to door | about 12 to 15 days |
Pricing and Customized Quotes
Every Hawaii-to-San Diego container shipment is priced individually. The final quote depends on the origin address, destination address, container size, trucking requirements, terminal routing, inland transportation, equipment availability and current ocean transportation rates.
What you are moving | Best option | Transport only, you load | Full service, we pack |
A few boxes | USPS flat rate | Priced per box | Not applicable |
About one room | A shared slot | Priced by volume | Quoted after a survey |
A 2 to 3 bedroom home | 20ft container | Lower end of the range | Quoted after a survey |
A larger household | 40ft container | Customized quote | Quoted after a survey |
Hawaiian Movers handles the two container rows. The first two are listed so you can see where a container stops being the sensible answer, because sending you to the post office with four boxes is better advice than selling you a container you do not need.
Hawaiian Movers does not publish a single flat price because two San Diego shipments can require very different trucking and access arrangements. A complete door-to-door quote is prepared after the customer provides the shipment details and a valid telephone number. Quotes remain valid for 30 days unless otherwise stated.
Every destination on this service is listed on all the mainland lanes we cover.
Preparing the Hawaii Loading Location
- Confirm that the property can legally and safely accommodate a container on a chassis.
- Check driveway width, overhead clearance, road access, gate restrictions and parking rules.
- Tell Hawaiian Movers about steep grades, narrow streets, low branches or limited turning space.
- Confirm whether the container will be loaded during a scheduled live-load appointment or another approved arrangement.
- Load and secure the contents carefully so they cannot shift during ocean and inland transportation.
Customer-owned containers may also be accepted after the equipment and shipment details are reviewed. The appropriate container size depends on the volume of the shipment, the loading location, the destination access and equipment availability.
Items That Require Approval
The customer must provide an accurate description of the shipment. Hazardous, combustible or restricted materials cannot be accepted. Electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, e-bikes and other lithium-battery equipment require special review and are not accepted as ordinary household goods. Agricultural items may also be subject to government inspection or restrictions when leaving Hawaii.
Do not load a questionable item until Hawaiian Movers and the applicable carrier requirements have been confirmed.

What You Cannot Ship Out of Hawaii
Hawaii is a quarantine state on the way out, which catches people by surprise because it is the reverse of what they expect. The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service regulates what may leave the islands for the mainland, and agricultural items have to be inspected and found pest free before they ship.
Not allowed to the mainland: soil, or any plant still sitting in soil. Berries of any kind, including fresh coffee berries and sea grapes. Cactus plants and cactus parts. Cotton plant parts, including cotton bolls. Live insects and snails. Seeds with fruit still clinging, and fresh seed pods. Sugarcane, raw sweet potato, swamp cabbage and mock orange. Most fresh fruit and vegetables.
Allowed once APHIS has inspected it: beach sand, coconuts, commercially canned food, dried seeds and decorative arrangements, hinahina, Irish and white potatoes, fresh pineapple, plants and cuttings, rocks and stones, seashells other than land snail shells, seed leis and seed jewelry, and wood including driftwood and dried wood roses.
Processed fruit and vegetables travel fine. Cooking, drying and freezing all count, though frozen fruit has to be solid at inspection and frozen mango has to be seedless.
The practical rule for a household move is simple: clean and dry anything that lived outdoors. Garden tools, mowers, camping gear and patio furniture all pass easily once the dirt is off them, and a potted plant does not pass at all. Sending a prohibited item anyway carries civil and criminal penalties, so it is worth ten minutes with a hose.
Inspection offices are Honolulu (808) 834-3220, Maui (808) 877-5261, Kauai (808) 632-2511, Hilo (808) 933-6930 and Kona (808) 326-1252. The full list is published in the federal agricultural rules.
Which Harbor Your Container Leaves From
Your container leaves through the harbor closest to you, not automatically through Honolulu. This is the single biggest difference between leaving the islands and arriving, and it is worth knowing before you book a flight.
Your island | Departure harbor | Sails direct to the mainland? |
Oahu | Honolulu Harbor | Yes, the most frequent departures |
Maui | Kahului | Yes, direct eastbound sailings |
Hawaii Island, Hilo side | Hilo | Yes, direct eastbound sailings |
Hawaii Island, Kona side | Kawaihae | Yes, direct eastbound sailings |
Kauai | Nawiliwili | Yes, direct eastbound sailings |
Molokai and Lanai | via Honolulu | Barged to Honolulu first |
Neighbor island departures run less often than Honolulu’s, so the wait for the right sailing usually matters more than the crossing itself.
Should You Ship Your Household or Sell It?
Ship it when the cost of replacing what you own beats the cost of moving it. That is usually true for a full household, for anything built to order, and for anything you would be unhappy to replace with a compromise.
Sell it when you are moving less than a room, when the furniture is near the end of its life anyway, or when what you own is easy to replace once you land in San Diego.
The honest cut line is volume. A few boxes are cheapest by mail. About one room is cheapest in a shared slot. A two to three bedroom home is a 20ft container, and a larger household is a 40ft. An exclusive-use container starts making sense at roughly the whole-home mark, which is the point where paying by the box stops being cheaper than paying by the container.
Two things people regret leaving behind more often than they expect: anything with a long lead time to replace, and anything that would cost more in mainland delivery fees than it would to put in a box you are already paying to ship.
