Container shipping to Lanai takes more planning than a move to any of the bigger islands. No mainland ship calls here, the island has one small cargo harbor, and nearly everyone lives in one town.
This page walks through the route, the harbor, the roads up to Lanai City, the timing and the cost, so you can plan the move around how the island really works.
How Do You Ship a Container to Lanai?
To ship a container to Lanai, you load an empty container at your mainland home and it sails to Honolulu. There it moves to an inter-island barge bound for Kaumalapau Harbor, the only commercial harbor on the island, on Lanai’s west coast. Plan on 12 to 20 days door to door, up to about 25.
How Shipping to Lanai Works
Lanai has no direct mainland service. Every mainland sailing calls at Honolulu first, and your container transfers there to an inter-island barge.
That transfer is the same step used for every neighbor island, and our guide to shipping through Honolulu explains how the port works. For Lanai, the barge crosses to Kaumalapau Harbor.
A container that just misses a sailing waits in Honolulu for the next one, so it pays to book early.
Kaumalapau Harbor: Lanai's One Cargo Port
Kaumalapau Harbor is Lanai’s only commercial harbor. It sits on the island’s rugged west coast, and it opened in 1926 to ship pineapple for the old plantation.
It is a small port. The state lists a single 400-foot berth and about 2.3 acres of land for cargo. It is a working cargo port with limited gate hours.
High surf or storm damage can close Kaumalapau. When that happens, cargo waits, and delays of several days have happened.
Delivering a Container Around Lanai
Lanai is small, and almost all of its roughly 3,300 residents live in Lanai City. The island has one cargo harbor, one main highway and one town.
From the Harbor Up to Lanai City
Route 440 is the island’s main state highway. The Kaumalapau Highway section leads steeply uphill from the harbor, past Lanai Airport, to Lanai City.
The climb runs from sea level to about 1,600 feet. Lanai City sits at 1,644 feet, with cooler air and more rain than the coast.
Lanai City was built in the 1920s as a plantation town around Dole Park, which is still the center of shops and services. Share your full Lanai address first, and we will review the route and container size with you.
Manele Bay and Hulopoe
The Manele Road section of Route 440 runs south from Lanai City down to Manele Bay and the entrance to Hulopoe Beach Park. This is the resort side of the island.
If your home is in a planned community, check with your association about where a container can stand and for how long.
Beyond the Paved Roads
Most of Lanai is served by dirt roads, not pavement. Places like Shipwreck Beach on the north shore are reached only by four-wheel drive, and the dirt roads should not be driven when wet.
If your address is off the paved network, tell us the full address, and we will check the route and container size before you book.
Most of Lanai’s land is privately owned and managed by Pulama Lanai. If you rent or lease, confirm any delivery rules with your landlord before the truck arrives.
How Long Container Shipping to Lanai Takes
Most Lanai moves take 12 to 20 days door to door, and longer routes can run to about 25. The ocean leg is the quick part: about 4 days to Honolulu from Long Beach, 5 from Oakland and 6 from Tacoma.
Allow about 7 to 10 days to reach Honolulu port to port, once terminal time is counted. The barge from Honolulu to Kaumalapau then pushes Lanai toward the longer end of that door-to-door range.
Leave spare days in your plans. A missed barge or a week of high surf can push delivery back.
Lanai Shipping Costs
Expect to pay about $10,000 to $20,000 for a full container from the mainland, loaded and unloaded by you. Where your move falls in that range depends mainly on your mainland starting city and the container size.
If you would rather not load it yourself, a crew can do it. A smaller container can also help on a tight street, and our guide to container sizes compares the options.
Lanai and Maui share a county government, but not a harbor. For the bigger island next door, see our page on moving a container to Maui. Vehicles never ride inside a household goods container, so book any car on its own.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Kaumalapau Harbor?
Kaumalapau Harbor is on the west coast of Lanai, at the western end of Route 440. It is the island’s only commercial harbor, so household containers, groceries and building supplies all arrive there by barge from Honolulu. From the harbor, Kaumalapau Highway climbs steeply past Lanai Airport to Lanai City, about 1,600 feet above the sea. The harbor is a working cargo port with limited gate hours, not a place to wait for your shipment.
Can you deliver a container to Manele Bay or Hulopoe?
Delivering a container to Manele Bay or Hulopoe starts with your full address. The Manele Road section of Route 440 runs south from Lanai City down to Manele Bay and the entrance to Hulopoe Beach Park, the resort side of the island. Many homes there sit in planned communities, so ask your association where a container can stand and for how long. Then tell us the address, and we will check the route and container size before you book.
What is the main highway on Lanai?
The main highway on Lanai is Route 440, a state road about 13 miles long. Its Kaumalapau Highway section climbs steeply from Kaumalapau Harbor past Lanai Airport to Lanai City. Its Manele Road section runs south from town to Manele Bay and Hulopoe Beach Park. Much of the rest of the island is dirt road that needs four-wheel drive. If your home is off Route 440, tell us the full address and we will check the route before you book.
What is it like living on Lanai, Hawaii?
Living on Lanai, Hawaii, means small-town life on a quiet island of about 3,300 people. Nearly everyone lives in Lanai City, an old plantation town built around Dole Park at about 1,600 feet, where the air is cooler than on the coast. Most of the island’s roads are dirt. Most goods arrive by barge, and residents learn to plan ahead, so plan your container move early.
Who owns most of the land on Lanai?
Most of the land on Lanai is privately held and managed by Pulama Lanai. The rest belongs to the State of Hawaii, Maui County and private homeowners. Kaumalapau Harbor itself is a state harbor, so household containers come in through the same public port as every other cargo shipment. If you are renting or leasing on the island, ask your landlord about any delivery or placement rules before your container arrives.
