Oregon to Hawaii freight often surprises people: Portland has a container terminal, yet the Hawaii ships do not leave from it. Your container usually starts its trip by truck to another state’s port. A freight forwarder sorts out that routing and books every leg.
How Does Oregon to Hawaii Freight Forwarding Work?
Oregon to Hawaii freight usually trucks north on I-5 to Tacoma, Washington, then sails with Matson to the islands. A forwarder books the ship, the trucking and the terminal access. Budget about $10,000 to $20,000 for a self-loaded full container and about 12 to 20 days door to door.
Why Oregon Containers Sail from Tacoma
Portland has a container terminal at Terminal 6, but Matson’s Hawaii sailings from the Pacific Northwest leave from the Port of Tacoma.
So for most Oregon addresses, the first leg is a drive up I-5. Portland to Tacoma is about 143 miles. Salem and Eugene add more miles to the south.
The ocean crossing from Tacoma takes about 6 days. Our page on Tacoma freight forwarding explains how that terminal works.
Southern Oregon and the Oakland Option
Matson also sails to Hawaii from Oakland, California. Portland is about 630 miles from Oakland, so Tacoma is the natural fit for the Willamette Valley.
Far southern Oregon is a different case. Medford and Ashland sit near the California line, and I-5 crosses Siskiyou Summit there at 4,310 feet, the highest point on the whole interstate.

What the Forwarder Handles
A forwarder does not own the ship. The work is booking each piece and making sure the pieces line up.
- Ocean space. We reserve your container on a Matson sailing from the Pacific Northwest or Oakland.
- Oregon drayage. A truck sets an empty container at your address, then takes it to the port once you load it.
- Terminal entry. Our drivers hold TWIC cards, and our UIIA approval covers taking a carrier's container through the terminal gate.
- Documents. We prepare the booking and the bill of lading.
- Island delivery. A Hawaii driver collects the container at the harbor and brings it to your door.
Hawaiian Movers is owned by Karen Danino, who coordinates each shipment. We are registered under USDOT 4024631, MC 1518931 and SCAC HWMI.
Packing for an Oregon Pickup
Western Oregon’s wet season and hilly neighborhoods are worth planning for. These tips are general advice, not rules.
- Keep things dry. Load on a dry day if you can, and wrap upholstered furniture and mattresses in plastic.
- Think about the driveway. Hillside streets in Portland and narrow rural roads can be tight for a long truck. A smaller container is often easier to place on a tight lot.
- Choose firm ground. Gravel or pavement works better than a soggy lawn.
- Check local rules. An HOA or city may limit how long a container can sit on the street.

When Your Container Reaches Hawaii
Containers bound for Oahu come off the ship at Honolulu Harbor. Cargo for Kauai and Maui moves on from Honolulu by inter-island vessel, which can add time.
On the Big Island, a draft environmental assessment from the Hawaii Department of Transportation reports that since 2021 Matson has unloaded all Big Island cargo at Kawaihae.
Plants, Soil and Hawaii Inspection
The Hawaii Department of Agriculture inspects agricultural items arriving in Hawaii, including plants, plant parts and soil. Companies carrying those items must notify a Plant Quarantine inspector.
Leave potted plants, soil and yard debris out of your Oregon container. Wash mud off bikes, mowers and garden tools before you load them.

Shipping plants from Oregon to Hawaii in a household container is a bad idea. The Hawaii Department of Agriculture requires inspection of all plants, plant parts and soil arriving in the state, and some plants need permits before they arrive.
