Nevada to Hawaii freight starts hundreds of miles from the nearest ocean. Before your container can board a ship, it has to cross the desert or the Sierra to reach a California port. A freight forwarder plans that drive and the sailing as one trip.
How Does Nevada to Hawaii Freight Forwarding Work?
Nevada to Hawaii freight moves by truck to a California port, then sails with Matson to the islands. A forwarder books the ship, the trucking at both ends and the terminal access. For a self-loaded full container, budget about $10,000 to $20,000 and about 12 to 20 days door to door.
Getting a Nevada Container to the Coast
The state is landlocked, so the first leg is by road for most shipments. The two big population centers point toward two different ports.
Las Vegas Valley to Long Beach
From Las Vegas, Henderson or North Las Vegas, the loaded container heads southwest on I-15. The truck drops down through Cajon Summit into the Inland Empire and reaches the Long Beach terminal after roughly 280 miles.
Long Beach is also the shortest crossing to Hawaii, at about 4 days on the water. Our guide to the Long Beach to Hawaii route covers that terminal in more depth.
Reno and Carson City to Oakland
Northern Nevada is closer to the Bay Area than to Southern California. A container from Reno or Sparks travels about 210 miles west on I-80 to Oakland.
The ocean crossing from Oakland takes about 5 days. Our page on Oakland freight forwarding explains that gateway.
Winter matters on this leg. I-80 climbs past 7,000 feet at Donner Summit, and Caltrans requires chains on heavy trucks during storms.
The Forwarder's Job from Nevada
You could call a trucker, a steamship line and an island hauler yourself. A forwarder replaces those calls with one contact and makes sure each step hands off to the next.
- Matson booking. We reserve space on a sailing from the port that suits your Nevada address.
- Mainland drayage. A truck brings the empty container to you, then hauls it to the port once it is loaded.
- Terminal access. Port terminals are secure areas. Our drivers carry TWIC cards, and our UIIA approval lets us move a carrier's equipment in and out.
- Shipping paperwork. We handle the booking and the bill of lading.
- Island delivery. A Hawaii driver picks up the container at the harbor and brings it to your new address.
Karen Danino, who owns Hawaiian Movers, coordinates every shipment. Our USDOT number is 4024631, our MC number is 1518931 and our SCAC code is HWMI.
Loading in the Desert or the Mountains
Nevada weather shapes how you pack. These are general tips, not requirements.
- Load in the cool hours. The normal July high in Las Vegas is about 104°F, according to the National Weather Service. Morning loading is easier on your crew and on heat-sensitive items.
- Watch the winter forecast. In Reno and Carson City, a storm over the Sierra can slow the truck that has to reach Oakland.
- Pick a firm, level spot. The container sits on the ground or on a chassis, and soft or sloped ground makes loading harder.
- Ask your HOA. Many communities have rules about containers in driveways or on the street.
Send your complete pickup address, and we will look at the route and which container size fits before you book.
Arriving in Hawaii
Honolulu Harbor on Oahu receives mainland cargo first. Containers for Kauai and Maui transfer there to an inter-island vessel, and that extra step can add time.
Big Island freight follows a different path. Since 2021, Matson has unloaded all Big Island cargo at Kawaihae, according to a draft environmental assessment from the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
Hawaii's Agricultural Inspection
The Hawaii Department of Agriculture requires inspection of all agricultural items arriving in the state, including plants, plant parts and soil. Transportation companies must notify a Plant Quarantine inspector about agricultural items in cargo.
Leave soil, potted plants and yard debris out of your Nevada container. Hose off outdoor furniture and tools before they go in.
What Freight Forwarding from Nevada Costs
A full container from the mainland to Hawaii runs about $10,000 to $20,000 when you load and unload it yourself. Container size and your Nevada starting point affect the quote the most.

Full Containers, Nothing Shared
We book exclusive-use full containers only: 20ft, 40ft, 40ft high cube and 45ft. You can bring your own container, too. Besides home furnishings, the container can hold commercial goods, for example a Nevada supplier’s inventory, equipment or building materials bound for an island job.
That means no shared space, pallets, small shipments or air freight. A vehicle needs a separate booking, and our page on shipping a car to Hawaii walks through it.
