Maui is the island most people picture when they imagine moving to Hawaii, and it attracts more relocation interest than anywhere except Oahu. It is also the island where the gap between the vacation version and the resident version is widest.
The Housing Reality
Maui had a tight housing market before the August 2023 Lahaina wildfire, and the loss of housing stock in that disaster intensified an existing shortage. Anyone planning a move here should research current conditions carefully and expect competition for rentals, particularly on the west side.
This is the single most important thing to understand before committing. Secure housing before you ship anything.
Upcountry Versus the Coast
Maui functions as several distinct places, and the differences are larger than the short driving distances suggest.
- Kahului and Wailuku. The working center of the island. The airport, the harbor, the county seat, the main shopping. Where most year round residents actually live.
- Kihei and Wailea. The sunny south shore. Kihei is more accessible, Wailea is resort territory.
- Upcountry: Makawao, Kula, Pukalani. Higher elevation on the slopes of Haleakala. Cooler, greener, genuinely rural in places, and a real drive to anywhere else.
- The north shore: Paia and Haiku. Windsurfing, small town character, wetter weather.
- Hana. Remote in a way that is difficult to overstate. The road takes hours, and daily life there requires planning.
Work
Maui’s economy leans heavily on tourism and the services around it, along with healthcare, construction and agriculture. Professional and specialist roles are fewer than on Oahu, and remote work has become a common answer for people who want the island without the local job market.
Weather Is Not One Thing Here
Elevation changes everything. Kihei is dry and hot. Upcountry is cool enough that residents own jackets. Hana is genuinely wet. Choosing where to live on Maui is partly choosing which climate you want to live in, and people who pick from a map without visiting often get this wrong.
Getting Your Belongings There
Cargo for Maui arrives at Kahului Harbor. Most mainland shipments discharge at Honolulu first and then move on an inter-island leg to Kahului, which adds a step and its own schedule.
