Kauai is the oldest and greenest of the main Hawaiian islands, and the most rural. People who move here generally do so on purpose, having decided that quiet matters more than convenience.
What Rural Actually Means Here
Kauai has around seventy thousand residents, no building taller than a coconut palm by local convention, and a single main road that does not go all the way around the island. The Na Pali coast blocks the northwest, so getting from Haena to Polihale means driving most of the way around the other side.
Practically, this means fewer shops, fewer restaurants, less price competition on goods, and a longer drive for specialist healthcare, which often means flying to Oahu.
Where People Live
- Lihue. The county seat and commercial center. The airport, the harbor, the hospital and most of the island’s employment.
- Kapaa and the east side. The most populated stretch, with the most services and the island’s only real traffic.
- Poipu and the south shore. Sunniest and driest, with a resort presence.
- Princeville and Hanalei. The north shore. Spectacular, wetter, and prone to road closures during heavy rain.
- Waimea and the west side. Dry, quiet and the most remote in feel.
Rain Is a Genuine Planning Factor
Mount Waialeale near the island’s center is among the wettest places on earth. The rain is not evenly distributed, and the difference between the north shore and the west side is dramatic. North shore roads do close during heavy rain, and that is worth knowing before choosing where to live.
Work
The economy is small and tourism dependent, with healthcare, government and agriculture behind it. Professional roles are limited. Many recent arrivals either work remotely, are retired, or bring their income with them. This is the practical constraint on moving to Kauai, more than housing or shipping.
Getting Your Belongings There
