Freight Forwarding from Hawaii to Texas

Hawaii to Texas freight has a long road waiting at the end of a short sail. The ocean leg ends in Southern California, and the container still has well over a thousand miles to go.

A freight forwarder keeps every piece of that trip connected. This page covers the route, what we coordinate, the cost and the timing.

How Does Freight Forwarding from Hawaii to Texas Work?

Freight forwarding from Hawaii to Texas means one company books your full container on a Matson sailing to Long Beach, then arranges intermodal rail east and a truck to your Texas address. A self-loaded container runs about $10,000 to $16,000 and takes 12 to 20 days door to door, sometimes up to 25.

The Route from the Islands to Texas

Texas cargo from Hawaii almost always comes ashore at the Port of Long Beach. Port to port, with terminal time on both sides, plan on about 7 to 10 days.

From Long Beach, the inland leg follows the Interstate 10 corridor east across the desert Southwest.

Texas metroApproximate road miles from Long BeachTypical inland mode
El PasoAbout 810Truck or rail
Dallas-Fort WorthAbout 1,400 to 1,450 (I-10, then I-20)Intermodal rail, then truck
HoustonAbout 1,550 (I-10 the whole way)Intermodal rail, then truck
Austin and San AntonioAbout 1,330 to 1,430Intermodal rail, then truck

At these distances, rail usually carries the long middle stretch. Union Pacific, for example, runs domestic intermodal trains between its ICTF terminal near Long Beach and its Dallas Intermodal Terminal in Hutchins. A local truck then pulls the container from the Texas rail ramp to your door.

El Paso is the exception. At roughly half the distance of Houston, the inland leg there is much shorter.

What We Coordinate on a Hawaii to Texas Shipment

A forwarder does not own the ship or the train. The job is to line up each handoff so your container never sits waiting for the next one.

Each booking is coordinated by Karen Danino, owner of Hawaiian Movers. Our federal numbers are USDOT 4024631 and MC 1518931, and our SCAC code is HWMI.

Moving Your Household? Start Here Instead

This page is about the freight forwarding side of the lane. If you are moving your household, see our Hawaii to Texas container shipping guide, which walks through packing, delivery in Texas neighborhoods and planning the move itself.

What Ships in the Container

We ship exclusive-use full containers only: 20ft, 40ft, 40ft high cube or 45ft. Your cargo never shares a box. We handle household goods and personal effects, plus business freight such as inventory, equipment or building materials, and we accept shipper-owned containers.

You can load and unload the container yourself, or ask us to book a crew to load it.

We do not offer shared, LCL, partial, pallet, small-shipment or air freight. Vehicles do not ride inside the container either. A car needs its own booking through car shipping from Hawaii.

Agricultural Rules Before You Load

Freight leaving Hawaii is screened for pests. The USDA’s plant health agency, APHIS, regulates what can travel from the islands to the mainland.

As general guidance from APHIS:

Check the current APHIS rules before you pack. Scrub dirt off yard tools, bikes and outdoor furniture so nothing carries soil.

Shipping from the Big Island

A state Department of Transportation draft environmental assessment reports that since 2021, Matson has used only Kawaihae Harbor for Big Island cargo. Starting on the Big Island? Share your full address and we will review the route and container size before you book.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shipping a container from Hawaii to Texas costs about $10,000 to $16,000. The range assumes you load and unload the full container yourself. Container size and your Texas delivery address move the price the most. A delivery in El Paso and one in Houston follow very different inland legs. Ask for a written quote that lists both addresses.

Freight from Hawaii to Texas usually travels by both. After the ship reaches Long Beach, intermodal rail typically carries the container east along the Interstate 10 corridor to a Texas rail ramp. A local truck then brings it to your door. El Paso is about 810 miles from Long Beach, so a truck alone is sometimes practical there. Dallas and Houston are far enough that rail is the usual choice.

Freight from Hawaii to Texas takes about 12 to 20 days door to door, and up to about 25 days on longer routes. Port to port, with terminal time, the ocean portion averages about 7 to 10 days. The rest is the island pickup, rail across the Southwest and the final truck delivery in Texas.

What you can’t ship from Hawaii to Texas is set mostly by USDA APHIS agricultural rules. Soil, plants in soil and most fresh fruits and vegetables are not allowed to leave Hawaii for the mainland. Some items, like fresh pineapple and coconuts, can go after inspection. Vehicles also cannot ride inside a household container. Check the current APHIS guidance before you pack.
