Hawaii to Idaho freight ends in mountain country, hundreds of miles inland from the ship that carries it. After the ocean crossing, your container still needs a truck, a route over the Cascades or the Blue Mountains and a safe place to land at your new address.
A freight forwarder plans all of that before the container leaves the islands. Here is how the trip comes together.
How Do You Ship Freight from Hawaii to Idaho?
Hawaii to Idaho freight sails in a full container with Matson to the Pacific Northwest, usually Tacoma, then travels by truck on I-90 or I-84 to your Idaho address. A container you load and unload yourself runs about $10,000 to $16,000, and door-to-door transit is 12 to 20 days, up to about 25.
Step by Step: What We Arrange
- An empty container at your island home. A truck delivers it to your Hawaii address so you can load.
- The harbor return. The loaded container goes back to the terminal to meet its sailing.
- Space on the ship. We book the Matson crossing and prepare the bill of lading and booking paperwork.
- Pickup at the Northwest terminal. Drivers with TWIC cards collect the container, and our UIIA approval covers the equipment interchange.
- The inland haul. A truck carries the container east into Idaho.
- Your Idaho driveway. The container is set down at your address for unloading.
All six steps are coordinated by Karen Danino, who owns Hawaiian Movers. Federal registration: USDOT 4024631 and MC 1518931, with SCAC HWMI.

Getting Ready on the Island
What the USDA will not let you ship
Freight leaving Hawaii for the mainland falls under USDA APHIS rules. Soil and plants growing in soil are prohibited, and most fresh fruits and vegetables are restricted because they can carry pests.
A handful of fruits, such as papaya, can go after treatment at a USDA-approved facility, packed and marked to APHIS standards. Inside a household container, leave produce, plants and garden soil behind, and hose off patio furniture and yard tools.
Starting from the Big Island
Big Island cargo has moved through Kawaihae, on the west coast, since Matson began unloading all of the island’s freight there in 2021. Starting in Hilo, Kona or Waimea? Share your full address so we can review the route and the right container size first.
Why Tacoma Is the Closest Port
Matson’s three West Coast terminals are in Long Beach, Oakland and Tacoma. Tacoma is the nearest of them to almost every town in Idaho, so it is the natural port to look at for this route.
The Drive from Tacoma into Idaho
To the Panhandle on I-90
Containers for Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls or Sandpoint head east on I-90. The truck climbs over Snoqualmie Pass, roughly 3,000 feet up, crosses central Washington and passes Spokane before reaching Idaho. Coeur d’Alene is about 340 miles from the port.
To the Treasure Valley on I-84
Boise, Meridian, Nampa and Caldwell are reached on I-84, which runs through eastern Oregon and the Blue Mountains. The drive to Boise is about 500 miles.
Eastern Idaho
Idaho Falls, Pocatello and Twin Falls sit farther east, along I-84, I-86 and I-15. Delivery there adds more road time, so give us the exact address early.
Winter Deliveries in Idaho
Snow can slow or briefly close I-90 at Snoqualmie Pass and I-84 in the Blue Mountains. Washington’s transportation department issues chain rules on Snoqualmie when roads demand them. If your delivery falls between November and March, keep your move-in plans flexible by a few days.
At the house, plan for the trailer as well as the container.
- Clear the snow. Plow or shovel a level landing spot and a path for the truck.
- Watch the spring thaw. Wet ground can trap a loaded trailer, so pick gravel or pavement.
- Look up. Check for low branches and power lines over the drop spot.
- Size for the lot. On a narrow lot, a 20ft container is often easier to place than a 40ft.
