Hawaii to Georgia freight makes two long trips in one: an ocean crossing to California, then a run across the whole country. Each half has its own carrier, its own schedule and its own paperwork.

A freight forwarder ties those halves together so your container keeps moving toward Georgia. Here is what that looks like, step by step.

How Do You Ship Freight from Hawaii to Georgia?

Hawaii to Georgia freight ships in a full container on a Matson vessel to a West Coast port, then moves east by rail or truck to your Georgia door. A container you load and unload yourself runs about $10,000 to $16,000. Door-to-door transit is usually 12 to 20 days, with some routes near 25.

Two Legs, One Booking

Leg one is the ocean. Your container leaves the islands on a Matson ship bound for the West Coast.

Leg two is land. From the port, the container heads east toward Georgia by train or by truck.

Each leg needs its own reservation, and the gap between them is where delays tend to start. The forwarder’s job is to have the second leg lined up before the first one ends.

What We Handle on a Hawaii to Georgia Shipment

Every one of these steps is coordinated by Karen Danino, who owns Hawaiian Movers. Our registrations are USDOT 4024631, MC 1518931 and SCAC code HWMI.

Before the Container Leaves Hawaii

Agricultural rules for outbound freight

USDA APHIS restricts many farm products leaving Hawaii for the mainland, because they can carry pests. Soil and plants in soil cannot go, and most fresh fruits and vegetables are restricted.

A short list of fruits, such as papaya and banana, may travel only after treatment at a USDA-approved facility. For a container, the easy rule is to leave produce, potted plants and soil behind. Rinse dirt from outdoor gear before you load it.

Pickups on the Big Island

Since 2021, Matson has unloaded all Big Island cargo at Kawaihae, on the island’s west side. If your container starts in Hilo, Kona or anywhere else on the Big Island, send us the full address so we can review the route and pick a container size that fits.

The Long Run East to Georgia

Long Beach is the closest Matson gateway to Georgia. By road, Atlanta lies about 2,200 miles east of the port, reached on interstates such as I-10 and I-20 or I-40.

Rail is the other choice for this distance. Atlanta has big intermodal terminals run by CSX in Fairburn and by Norfolk Southern in Austell. At the rail ramp, a truck collects the container for its last miles to your door.

Reaching the rest of Georgia

From Atlanta, I-75 heads south to Macon, and I-16 carries on to Savannah. I-20 runs east to Augusta, and I-185 reaches Columbus. A delivery outside metro Atlanta simply adds that last stretch of road.

Unloading at Your Georgia Address

If you are moving your household, our page on Hawaii to Georgia container shipping covers the move itself, from packing to settling in.

Container Choices

Every shipment is an exclusive-use full container, so your freight never rides with anyone else’s. Pick from 20ft, 40ft, 40ft high cube or 45ft. You can bring your own shipper-owned container, too. Both household moves and commercial freight fit this service, including product inventory, work equipment and building materials.

You can handle the loading, or we can book a crew for you. We do not offer shared or partial loads, pallet freight, small shipments or air freight. Vehicles go on a separate booking through car shipping from Hawaii, not inside the container. To compare inside space, check our container size chart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shipping from Hawaii to the mainland in a full container costs about $10,000 to $16,000 when you load and unload it yourself, and a Georgia delivery falls in that range. Container size and your exact delivery address move the number most. Get a written quote that lists the container size, the island pickup address and the Georgia address, so you can compare offers fairly.

You can’t bring soil, plants in soil or most fresh fruits and vegetables from Hawaii to the mainland unless they meet USDA rules. APHIS restricts these items because they can carry invasive pests. A few fruits, such as papaya and banana, can go after treatment at an approved facility and proper marking. For a container headed to Georgia, leave produce and plants behind.

Freight shipping from Hawaii to Georgia in a full container usually runs 12 to 20 days from pickup to delivery, with the longest routes reaching about 25 days. Port to port, counting terminal handling, runs about 7 to 10 days. The rest of the time goes into the cross-country move from the West Coast to Georgia and the final delivery to your address.

A disadvantage of using intermodal transport is the number of handoffs. A container going from Hawaii to Georgia can pass from a ship to a terminal, then to a rail ramp and a truck. Each switch adds waiting time, and a missed connection can push delivery back. Booking the legs together, with one contact responsible for the whole trip, lowers that risk.
