In a hurry? Skip ahead to the free container shipping quote form.
Hawaii to Florida freight travels farther than almost any other domestic shipment. After a few days at sea, your container still has the width of the country ahead of it.
With that many miles and handoffs, one coordinator matters. This page covers the route, the price range, realistic timing and what Hawaii’s agricultural rules keep out of the box.
What Does a Hawaii to Florida Freight Forwarder Do?
A Hawaii to Florida freight forwarder books your full container on a Matson sailing to the West Coast, then moves it about 2,400 to 2,700 miles east by intermodal rail to your Florida address. A container you load and unload yourself costs about $10,000 to $16,000. Plan on the upper end of the timing range, up to about 25 days.
The Route: Pacific First, Then Coast to Coast
Freight leaving the islands normally sails to a West Coast terminal first, and from there it continues east by land. That makes this a two-part trip:
- The ocean leg. The container sails to Southern California, usually Long Beach.
- The land leg. It then rides intermodal rail across the southern states to Florida, with a truck making the final run from the railhead to your door.
The southern corridor follows the line of Interstate 10, which runs from the Los Angeles area all the way to Jacksonville. Rail covers similar ground through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and the Gulf Coast.
| Florida delivery area | Approximate road miles from Southern California |
| North Florida and Jacksonville | About 2,400 |
| Central Florida, including Tampa and Orlando | About 2,500 |
| South Florida and Miami | About 2,700 |
Each Handoff Your Forwarder Manages
Think of the forwarder as the person holding the full itinerary. Here is what that covers on this lane.
- The empty container. A truck drops it at your Hawaii address and hauls it back to the harbor once packed.
- The sailing. Your box is booked on a Matson vessel, and the bill of lading and booking documents are drawn up.
- The West Coast terminal. Our TWIC-carded drivers and UIIA interchange approval let us move the container out of the port yard.
- Rail across the country. The container is placed on an eastbound intermodal train.
- Final delivery in Florida. A truck carries it from the Florida railhead to your address.
Several separate companies touch the container on the way, while you keep a single point of contact.

Before It Leaves Hawaii: Agricultural Rules
Freight bound for the mainland has to follow USDA APHIS rules. Treat the list below as general guidance and check APHIS before you pack. Plants, soil and many fresh foods from Hawaii can carry fruit flies and plant diseases that do not exist on the mainland, so their movement is limited.
- Soil and plants potted in soil are not allowed to go.
- Most fresh fruits and vegetables are restricted, and berries of any kind are prohibited.
- Agricultural items must be inspected before shipping, according to the Hawaii Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity.
Wash yard tools, patio furniture, bikes and boots before loading them.
Starting on the Big Island? A state environmental assessment reports that Matson has worked Big Island cargo only through Kawaihae Harbor, on the west side, since 2021. Before you book, send us the full pickup address so we can check the route and pick a container size that fits.
Florida Delivery Factors
The Florida end of the trip has its own conditions.
- Hurricane season. The Atlantic season lasts from June 1 to November 30. Storms can shut highways and slow rail terminals, so a summer or fall delivery needs extra room in the schedule.
- Humidity. Florida air is damp, and a steel container gets hot inside. Plan to unpack promptly and air things out.
- Community rules. HOAs and condo boards often limit where a container can sit and for how long. Ask yours before the delivery day.
- Placement. A firm, level spot makes the drop and pickup easier.
Full Containers, Exclusive Use
You get the whole container, with no other shipper’s goods inside. Choose 20ft, 40ft, 40ft high cube or 45ft, and use our container dimensions guide to compare space. Load it yourself or have us book a crew. Shipper-owned containers are welcome too. Whether the load is a family’s furniture or a firm’s inventory, equipment and building materials, the container travels as one exclusive shipment.
Small loads are a different business. We do not offer pallets, partial or shared loads, small shipments or air freight. Cars book apart from the container, through car shipping from Hawaii.

Hawaii to Florida Price and Timing
Hawaii to the mainland runs about $10,000 to $16,000 for a full container you load and unload yourself. Your container size and Florida delivery address have the biggest effect on the quote.
- Port to port: roughly 7 to 10 days with terminal handling.
- Door to door: most mainland routes take 12 to 20 days, and Florida sits at the upper end, up to about 25 days.
Rail across the country is the reason. It is the longest single piece of this trip.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does freight take from Hawaii to Florida?
Freight from Hawaii to Florida takes up to about 25 days door to door, at the long end of mainland timing. Port to port, counting terminal time at both harbors, is around 7 to 10 days. Rail across roughly 2,400 to 2,700 miles of the country fills the remaining time. Allow extra time during storm months.
How much does it cost to ship cargo from Hawaii to Florida?
Shipping cargo from Hawaii to Florida in a full container costs about $10,000 to $16,000 when you handle the loading and unloading. The two biggest factors are the container size you choose and your Florida delivery address. Ask every company for its quote in writing, with the box size, pickup and delivery addresses and port spelled out. Then you can compare offers line by line.
What can't I ship from Hawaii to Florida?
What you can’t ship from Hawaii to Florida includes soil, plants in soil and most fresh fruits and vegetables, under USDA APHIS rules for leaving Hawaii. Berries of any kind are also barred. Florida has major farm and citrus areas, and these rules help keep Hawaii’s fruit flies and plant pests off the mainland. Have any agricultural items inspected before shipping, and clean dirt off outdoor gear.
Does hurricane season affect freight from Hawaii to Florida?
Hurricane season can affect freight from Hawaii to Florida, mostly at the Florida end. From the first of June through the end of November, Atlantic storms can shut roads, back up rail yards or push back the last truck run to your home. The ocean leg in the Pacific is a separate trip and is not affected by Atlantic storms. If your delivery falls in those months, build a few spare days into your plans.
