Freight shipping from Hawaii looks simple until you count the pieces: an island truck, a ship, a West Coast terminal, and another truck or a train on the mainland. A freight forwarder ties those pieces together and gives you a single point of contact.

What Does a Freight Forwarder From Hawaii Do?

We coordinate full-container freight from Hawaii to the mainland, door to door. That covers the sailing, trucking at each end and terminal pickup. A full container you load and unload yourself typically costs $10,000 to $16,000. Door to door takes about 12 to 20 days, and longer routes can run to about 25.

What a Freight Forwarder Does on an Outbound Shipment

A freight forwarder does not own the ship. We book space with the ocean carrier, Matson, and arrange every handoff around that booking:

How Shipping From Hawaii to the Mainland Works

Leaving From a Neighbor Island

Containers from the neighbor islands connect through Honolulu, which can add time.

The Big Island has its own twist. A state environmental assessment reports that since 2021, Matson has used only Kawaihae Harbor for Big Island cargo.

That means a container loaded on the Hilo side has to reach Kawaihae before it sails to Honolulu Harbor. Our page on Kawaihae Harbor container shipping explains how that harbor works.

West Coast Arrival Ports and Inland Delivery

Mainland-bound containers arrive at West Coast ports such as Long Beach, Oakland and Tacoma. From there, the container continues by truck, or by rail and then truck, to states as far inland as Texas, Colorado or Montana.

California has the shortest land leg, and our guide to Hawaii to California container shipping covers that route. A longer land leg adds days.

Agricultural Rules for Cargo Leaving Hawaii

The Hawaii Department of Agriculture explains that the U.S. Department of Agriculture regulates agricultural items moving to the mainland.

USDA’s plant health service (APHIS) restricts many items because they can carry invasive pests. Treat the lists below as general packing guidance, and check APHIS before you pack.

Items APHIS does not allow to the mainland include:

Items allowed after inspection include fresh pineapple, coconuts, rocks, seashells (not land snail shells) and driftwood. Rooted plants need certification from the Hawaii Department of Agriculture.

Before you load, hose the soil off garden tools, bikes and patio furniture.

What Ships in Your Container

We ship exclusive-use full containers only (20ft, 40ft, 40ft high cube and 45ft) for household goods, personal effects, business freight and other approved full-container shipments. Shipper-owned containers are welcome.

Outbound business freight works the same way. Equipment, inventory or materials leaving the islands ride in their own sealed container, booked, trucked and delivered like any other load to the mainland.

We do not take shared, LCL, partial, pallet or small shipments, or air freight. Cars ship on their own, never inside the container.

If you are sending only a few boxes, a parcel service or a shared-load provider will cost far less.

Frequently Asked Questions

To ship a container from Hawaii to the mainland, book a full container through a freight forwarder and load it at your home. A driver takes it to the harbor, it sails to a West Coast port, and it continues by truck, or by rail and then truck, to your new address. A full container you load and unload yourself typically costs $10,000 to $16,000. Door to door takes about 12 to 20 days, and longer routes can run to about 25.

Shipping soil, or any plant growing in soil, from Hawaii to the mainland is not allowed under USDA rules. Soil can carry invasive pests and diseases. Plants and cuttings without soil may be allowed after USDA APHIS inspection, and rooted plants need certification from the Hawaii Department of Agriculture. Before you pack, wash the dirt off garden tools, pots and outdoor furniture, and check with APHIS about any plant you want to bring.

Shipping food from Hawaii to the mainland is allowed for some items and banned for others. USDA rules ban most fresh fruits and vegetables, including berries, because they can carry invasive pests. Commercially canned food is allowed after inspection, and so are fresh pineapple and coconuts. Cooked, dried or frozen fruits and vegetables are allowed too. If you are unsure about an item, call your local USDA APHIS office in Hawaii before you pack it into your container.

The cheapest way to ship something from Hawaii to the mainland depends on how much you are sending. A few boxes usually cost the least by mail or a parcel service. Loads that will not fill a container often go with a shared-load provider. A full container makes sense when you are moving a whole household, because one price covers the entire box. We ship exclusive-use full containers only, so we are the right fit for that larger end of the scale.
