Container shipping to Honolulu is the most direct way to move a household from the mainland to Hawaii. Oahu is the one island where the ship from the West Coast unloads your container right at its home harbor, with no second vessel.
This page covers how your container gets from Honolulu Harbor to your street, what each part of Oahu needs on delivery day, and the real cost and timing.
How Do You Ship a Container to Honolulu?
We drop an empty full container at your mainland home, you load it, and it sails straight to Honolulu Harbor with no inter-island transfer. A driver with a TWIC card then trucks it to your Oahu address. Most moves take 12 to 20 days door to door, and a full container costs about $10,000 to $20,000.
Why Honolulu Is the Fastest Hawaii Destination
Honolulu Harbor is the hub of the state’s commercial harbor system. Cargo from the mainland lands here first, and then it either stays on Oahu or moves on to the neighbor islands.
That matters for anyone moving to Oahu. A container bound for Kauai, Maui or the Big Island has to transfer at Honolulu to an inter-island vessel. Your Oahu container skips that step.
- One ocean leg. About 4 days from Long Beach, 5 from Oakland and 6 from Tacoma.
- No transfer wait. Neighbor-island moves sit toward the long end of the range. Honolulu moves usually do not.
Where Your Container Comes Off the Ship
Mainland containers carried by Matson are unloaded at the Sand Island Container Terminal, on Piers 52 and 53 across the channel from downtown. Sand Island Access Road links the terminal to Nimitz Highway and the H-1 freeway.
The terminal is a secure area. Our drivers carry TWIC cards to enter it, and we are UIIA approved to take a carrier’s container out of the yard (USDOT 4024631, MC 1518931, SCAC HWMI). We also accept shipper-owned containers.
How Shipping to Honolulu Works, Step by Step
- We drop the container. An exclusive-use 20ft, 40ft, 40ft high cube or 45ft container arrives at your mainland address.
- You load it. Load it yourself, or ask us to book a crew.
- It sails to Honolulu. Port to port, including terminal time, takes about 7 to 10 days.
- It clears the terminal. A driver with a TWIC card pulls it out of the terminal on a chassis.
- It arrives at your door. You unload it.
A car does not ride inside a household container. It ships on its own, and our car shipping to Hawaii page explains how.
Delivering a Container Around Oahu
Traffic, hills and building rules change the plan from one part of Oahu to the next. Here is what to plan for in each region. For schools, housing costs and daily life, our Oahu relocation guide goes deeper.
Urban Honolulu: Kakaako, Makiki, Manoa and Kaimuki
Much of town is high-rise condos and older walk-ups on tight streets. Many Kakaako and Makiki towers ask residents to book a loading dock and a freight elevator, so ask your building manager for the rules in writing early.
Manoa and Kaimuki have more single-family homes, but narrow streets and curb parking are common. A container on a city street needs a city street usage permit.
Leeward and West Oahu: Kapolei, Ewa Beach and Waipahu
Kapolei and Ewa Beach are newer planned communities west of Pearl Harbor, reached by the H-1 freeway. Driveways are often wider here, but many subdivisions have HOA rules on containers and how long one can stay.
Waipahu sits between Pearl City and Kapolei. The H-1 through this stretch is one of the busiest roads on the island at rush hour.
Many military families live in this area, near Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Base housing has its own gate and access rules. Tell us your full address, and we will check the route and container size before you book.
Central Oahu: Mililani, Wahiawa and Schofield
Mililani is a large planned town off the H-2 freeway, with HOA rules in most neighborhoods. Wahiawa sits on the plateau just north of it, next to Schofield Barracks.
Single-family homes often make driveway drops easier.
Windward Oahu: Kailua and Kaneohe
To reach the Windward side, a truck crosses the Koolau mountains. The Pali Highway leads to Kailua, and the Likelike Highway and the H-3 freeway lead to Kaneohe.
These mountain routes have tunnels and scheduled repair closures, so check for closures before delivery day.
North Shore: Haleiwa and Beyond
Haleiwa and the North Shore sit along Kamehameha Highway, which is two lanes for much of the way. Some beach lots have short, sandy or narrow driveways.
A smaller container is often easier to place on a tight lot.
Cost and Timing for Honolulu Deliveries
Here are the figures we quote for mainland to Oahu moves:
| Item | Typical range |
| Ocean crossing to Honolulu | About 4 to 6 days, depending on the West Coast port |
| Port to port, with terminal time | About 7 to 10 days |
| Door to door to Oahu | 12 to 20 days, up to about 25 on longer routes |
| Full container, you load and unload | $10,000 to $20,000 |
Your price moves with the container size and your mainland starting point. Our guide to the cost of moving to Hawaii covers the other costs of a move.
Picking the Right Container Size
Every container is yours alone. We do not ship shared, partial or pallet loads. The size you need depends on how much you own, and a smaller box is easier to place on a tight street.
Compare the space in each on our container size chart.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to ship a container to Honolulu?
Shipping a full container to Honolulu costs about $10,000 to $20,000 when you load and unload it yourself. The price depends mostly on the container size and your mainland starting point. An Oahu move has one ocean leg, not two, and the crossing takes about 4 days from Long Beach. If the container must sit on a city street, budget for a street usage permit too.
Do I need a permit for a shipping container on a Honolulu street?
Yes, you need a permit to place a shipping container on a Honolulu street. The City and County of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services issues street usage permits for anything set on a public street or sidewalk. A container that sits fully on your own driveway or lot does not use the street. Apply before delivery day, and check your HOA or condo rules too.
Is Honolulu the same as Oahu?
Honolulu and Oahu are not quite the same, but they share one government. The City and County of Honolulu covers the whole island of Oahu, from Kapolei to Kailua and the North Shore. The city of Honolulu itself is the urban area on the south shore, around Honolulu Harbor. That is why one set of city rules, such as the street usage permit, applies across the island.
Where is Sand Island Container Terminal?
Sand Island Container Terminal is on Sand Island, across the harbor channel from downtown Honolulu, at Piers 52 and 53 of Honolulu Harbor. Matson, the ocean carrier we book with, runs the terminal. Sand Island Access Road connects it to Nimitz Highway. It is a secure port area, so a driver needs a TWIC card to enter without an escort.
Do HOAs in Kapolei and Mililani allow shipping containers?
HOAs in Kapolei and Mililani set their own rules on shipping containers, so the answer depends on your association. Both towns are large planned communities, and many neighborhoods limit where a container can sit, how long it can stay, and street parking. Read your association rules first. Then get written approval with the dates you plan to load or unload.
