Moving to Hilo means your whole household has to cross an ocean, then find its way down a rainy East Hawaii road. Container shipping to Hilo is the simplest way to do it: one sealed box, packed at your old home and opened at your new one.
Here is how your container reaches East Hawaii, what delivery looks like there, and the real timing and cost.
How Do You Ship a Container to Hilo?
We deliver an empty full container to your mainland home, you load it, and it sails to Honolulu. It moves to an inter-island barge bound for the Big Island, comes ashore at Kawaihae Harbor, and is trucked across the island to your Hilo address. Most moves take 12 to 20 days door to door, and some run to about 25.
Where Your Hilo Container Comes Ashore
Many people expect a Hilo container to arrive at Hilo Harbor. That is not how it works today.
Hilo Harbor is still the state’s main East Hawaii port. The State of Hawaii Department of Transportation, Harbors Division, runs it, and a breakwater nearly 2 miles long shelters the basin.
Matson, the ocean carrier we book with, now unloads its Big Island cargo at Kawaihae Harbor instead, so a Hilo container is trucked across the island from there. Kawaihae Harbor sits on the northwest coast.
The Honolulu transfer puts Big Island moves toward the longer end of our door-to-door range. Our Kawaihae Harbor page walks through each step, from loading at home to the harbor pickup.
The short version: your container crosses the Pacific to Honolulu, then rides an inter-island barge to Kawaihae. A driver pulls it out of the Kawaihae yard on a chassis and trucks it to your Hilo address.
Port gates are secure federal areas, so our drivers carry TWIC cards. We are UIIA approved (USDOT 4024631, MC 1518931, SCAC HWMI), and shipper-owned containers are welcome.
A car travels on its own booking, not packed in with your furniture. See vehicle shipping to Hawaii for how that works.
Delivering a Container Around Hilo and East Hawaii
East Hawaii is spread out, and road conditions change fast once you leave town.
Hilo Town
Hilo is the county seat and the largest town on the island. Neighborhoods such as Waiakea and Kaumana sit close to downtown Hilo.
Kaumana climbs uphill from town, so check for steep driveways, low wires and overhanging trees.
Keaau
Keaau sits about 8 miles south of Hilo, where Highway 11 meets Highway 130. It is the gateway to Puna.
Puna: Pahoa, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Orchidland and Leilani
Puna is where planning matters most. Hawaiian Paradise Park and Orchidland are large private subdivisions off Highway 130 between Keaau and Pahoa, and Leilani Estates lies past Pahoa.
The roads inside these subdivisions are private, and many are unpaved. The county does not maintain them, so ruts, potholes and soft shoulders are common after heavy rain.
Send us your full Puna or Hilo address, and we will look at the route and the right container size before you book. It helps to know:
- Whether your road is paved, gravel or dirt
- How wide it is and where a truck can turn around
- Whether the drop spot is lava rock, gravel or soft ground
- Whether your road association has rules about heavy trucks
Volcano
Volcano village sits about 27 miles from Hilo on Highway 11, at roughly 3,700 feet. It is cooler, wetter and often foggy.
Village lots are wooded and many streets are narrow. Send us your full Puna or Hilo address, and we will look at the route and the right container size before you book.
Hamakua Coast: Papaikou to Honokaa
Highway 19 runs north from Hilo along the Hamakua Coast. Papaikou is only a few miles out of town, while Honokaa is about 42 miles away.
That stretch crosses dozens of gulches on more than 50 bridges, with some sharp curves.
For Kona, Waikoloa and other west side addresses, see our Kona container delivery page, which covers that side of the island.
Packing for Hilo Rain and Humidity
Hilo gets more than 100 inches of rain a year, and the air stays humid. A sealed steel box can trap moisture, so the usual advice is to load only dry items and add moisture absorbers. The FAQ below has more general packing tips.
Timing and Cost for Hilo Deliveries
These are the figures we quote for mainland to Big Island moves:
| Item | Typical range |
| Ocean crossing to Honolulu | About 4 to 6 days, by West Coast port |
| Port to port, with terminal time | About 7 to 10 days |
| Door to door to Hilo | 12 to 20 days, up to about 25 |
| Full container, you load and unload | $10,000 to $20,000 |
Your price moves with the container size and your mainland starting point. Our Hawaii moving cost breakdown lists the other costs to budget for.
Picking a Container Size
Choose from 20ft, 40ft, 40ft high cube or 45ft. Every container is exclusive to one household, and we do not combine loads or take pallet shipments.
A 20ft container often suits a small home, while larger homes usually need a 40ft or bigger. You can compare the space in each on our container size chart.
Your Hilo move is coordinated by Karen Danino, who owns Hawaiian Movers.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does a container get to Hilo if the ship unloads at Kawaihae?
A container gets to Hilo from Kawaihae by truck. Matson, the ocean carrier we book with, unloads its Big Island cargo at Kawaihae Harbor on the northwest coast. A driver with a TWIC card picks up your container from the harbor yard on a chassis and drives it across the island to your Hilo address. Most Big Island moves take 12 to 20 days door to door, and some run to about 25.
Are the roads in Puna subdivisions private?
Yes, the roads in Puna subdivisions such as Hawaiian Paradise Park and Orchidland are private. The county does not maintain them, and many are unpaved gravel or dirt. Heavy rain can leave them soft, rutted or full of potholes. If you are moving to Puna, send us your full Puna or Hilo address, and we will look at the route and the right container size before you book.
How should I pack for Hilo's humidity?
Packing for Hilo’s humidity starts with keeping moisture out of the container. The usual advice is to load only dry items, and never pack damp towels, rugs, tents or outdoor gear. Place desiccant packs throughout the load. Wrap wood and leather furniture in breathable moving pads rather than tight plastic. Put photos and papers in lidded plastic bins. Open the doors and unload soon after delivery.
How far is Keaau from Hilo?
Keaau is about 8 miles south of Hilo, at the junction of Highway 11 and Highway 130. It is the first town on the way into Puna, so many deliveries to Hawaiian Paradise Park, Orchidland and Pahoa pass through it. Keaau is on the wet east side too, so plan for damp ground and pack your container with humidity in mind.
Do you need a concrete slab for a shipping container?
No, a moving container that stays a short time generally does not need a concrete slab. As general practice, it needs firm, level ground that can hold a loaded truck and chassis. A paved driveway or packed gravel pad usually works best. In Puna, soft ground and muddy unpaved roads after heavy rain are the main risks, so check your drop spot before delivery day.
