Freight Forwarding from Texas to Hawaii

In a hurry? Skip ahead to the free container shipping quote form.
Texas to Hawaii freight starts with a surprise for most shippers: it does not leave from a Gulf port. Your container rolls west across three more states before it ever reaches a ship.
That makes the overland leg the biggest part of the job. Here is how a forwarder runs it, what it costs and how long it takes.
What Is Freight Forwarding from Texas to Hawaii?
Freight forwarding from Texas to Hawaii means one company moves your full container west to the Port of Long Beach by truck and rail, books it on a Matson sailing and arranges island delivery. A self-loaded container costs about $10,000 to $20,000 and arrives in 12 to 20 days door to door, up to about 25.
Why Texas Cargo Heads West First
Hawaii’s mainland container service runs from West Coast ports. For Texas, the natural gateway is Long Beach, which is also the shortest ocean crossing to Honolulu at about 4 days.
Getting there is the long part. Interstate 10 links Southern California with El Paso, San Antonio and Houston. Dallas-Fort Worth connects by Interstate 20, which splits from I-10 in West Texas.
| Pickup area | Rough road miles to Long Beach | Common options |
| Houston and the Gulf Coast | About 1,550 | Truck to a rail ramp, then rail west |
| Dallas-Fort Worth | About 1,400 to 1,450 | Truck to a rail ramp, then rail west |
| Austin and San Antonio | In between | Truck to a rail ramp, then rail west |
| El Paso and far West Texas | About 810 | Truck, or rail where it fits |
Rail is a common option on long Texas runs. Union Pacific, for one, runs intermodal service between the Long Beach area and its Dallas terminal in Hutchins, and it operates another intermodal terminal in Houston.
The Forwarder's Checklist for Texas Freight
Think of the forwarder as the person holding the whole schedule. Each step has to land before the next one can start.
- Empty container delivery. A trucker drops the box at your Texas address.
- Inland move to the port. Once loaded, it goes by truck to a rail ramp and rides west, or makes the trip by road on shorter runs.
- Sailing cutoff. The container has to reach the Long Beach terminal before the cutoff for its Matson sailing.
- Terminal entry. Our drivers hold TWIC cards, and we are UIIA approved for container interchange at the port.
- Shipping documents. We prepare the booking and the bill of lading.
- Island delivery. After the crossing, a truck brings the container from the Hawaii terminal to your address.
Karen Danino, who owns Hawaiian Movers, coordinates the whole lane. You can check our registrations: USDOT 4024631, MC 1518931 and SCAC code HWMI.

Moving Your Household from Texas?
If you are moving your household, see our Texas to Hawaii container shipping page for the moving side of the trip. This page stays on the forwarding side of the route.
Container Options and Limits
Every shipment is an exclusive-use full container. Pick a 20ft, 40ft, 40ft high cube or 45ft box. Household goods and personal effects qualify, and so does business freight, like a company restocking an island store from Texas or sending equipment and building materials. Shipper-owned containers are welcome.
You can do the loading yourself or have us line up a loading crew.
A few things fall outside our service:
- Shared, LCL or partial loads
- Pallet freight and small shipments
- Air freight
- Cars packed inside a household container
A vehicle needs its own booking. Our guide to car shipping to Hawaii explains how that works.
Loading Day in Texas
Some Texas conditions shape a good pickup day. These are general tips, not rules.
- Heat. Summer afternoons inside a steel container are brutal. Start loading early.
- Storms. The Atlantic hurricane season lasts from June 1 through November 30. If you load near the coast during those months, keep your pickup date flexible.
- Moisture. Pack only dry items. Damp goods sealed in a box for two to three weeks can grow mildew.
- Space and rules. A loaded chassis needs firm, level ground. Check your HOA or deed rules on how long a container may stay.
Unsure whether a truck can reach your loading spot? Share the full pickup address first. We can talk through truck access and the right container size before anything is booked.
Hawaii Arrival
Containers for Oahu come off the ship at Honolulu Harbor and are trucked to the delivery address. Maui and Kauai freight changes to an inter-island vessel at Honolulu, which can add time.
Big Island freight runs through Kawaihae Harbor. Since 2021, Big Island cargo on Matson has moved only through Kawaihae, according to a draft environmental assessment from the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
Hawaii also screens what arrives. The state Department of Agriculture restricts soil, plants and some other items, so check its rules before you load.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Texas shipments to Hawaii leave from a Gulf port?
Texas shipments to Hawaii do not leave from a Gulf port. Hawaii’s mainland container sailings run from the West Coast, so Texas freight travels west first. Most loads go by truck to a Texas rail ramp, then by rail to the Long Beach area. From Long Beach, the ocean crossing to Honolulu takes about 4 days. Houston is about 1,550 road miles from Long Beach, and Dallas is about 1,400 to 1,450.
What does Texas to Hawaii freight cost?
Texas to Hawaii freight costs about $10,000 to $20,000 when you book a full container and handle the loading and unloading on your own. Container size and where in Texas the box starts are the biggest factors. Get a written quote that names the container size and both addresses before you book.
How long does freight take from Texas to Hawaii?
Freight from Texas to Hawaii usually needs 12 to 20 days from your door to the island address. Some longer routes stretch closer to 25 days. The inland run from Texas to Long Beach is a large share of that time. The sailing itself is only about 4 days, and port to port with terminal time runs about 7 to 10 days. Neighbor island deliveries transfer at Honolulu, which can add time.
Can I ship my car with my freight from Texas to Hawaii?
You can ship a car to Hawaii from Texas, but not inside your freight container. Vehicles travel on their own booking, separate from household goods and personal effects. Ask about the vehicle separately, since it is its own booking. Keep household items out of the car unless the vehicle carrier’s rules allow them, because the car is not part of your container load.
